Hello Hungry Kiddies!
Hellloooooooooo!
I don't know about you, but it blows my mind that even though Big Poppa and I have both been home for basically 15 months, our linen closet looks like the neighborhood kids' fort. Like- how did this happen? It isn't as if NO ONE had time to properly fold the sheets and towels and put them away. It seems that we are missing the "project" gene right now. I am hoping that the embarassment of radical transparency will inspire one of us to take it apart and start over again.
I started to read The Cut and Grubstreet again after taking the year off, Seeing the stories about the kids all going out every single night and having mulitple social invitations like the "before times" just makes me feel (for the first time!) old. Seeing the article about the 66 most interesting and fabulous restaurants made me really miss Anna, a most excellent dining partner. Tonight we are meeting friends (from the Fressen days!!) at Via Carota- I am VERY excited about all of that, but I can't be the only person who wants to be out but is struggling to find the balance. The one thing I am DYING to do is go to a daytime rooftop dance session- I am hoping to get to this one that requires proof of vaccination.
I spent Sunday and Monday nights watching Pose- and aside from my food looking fantastic, I have to say it was really cathartic to watch a show about another plague that visted upon us, as Shakespeare might say. Also, the acting, particularly Billy Porter's- was very inspired. Porter TORE. IT. UP. I hope he is rewarded.
Good news! Greta and I are going to make some soul food for a tv shoot this Wednesday so YOU will get some too. I don't know how I became the soul food go to for food styling in NYC but I am HERE FOR THAT. Take your dad some collards and pulled pork for Father's Day!
I DO know that if you or anyone else is throwing a summer soiree with friends, etc, please think of me. I am open to catering certain events and would love the recommendations. My staff is all vaccinated and want to work and I would love to be able to give them work.
I also know that I am taking my dad and Caleb on a little road trip from ATL to the Florida Keys in August, most likely the 22- Sept 2ish. I will of course let you know when I know. To that end, We want to spend 3-4 days driving our way from ATL- Key Largo. Small roads, noodling around, few to no highways. If anyone has must see things to see/do/eat in that area LET ME KNOW. I need to get booking places to stay, etc but that requires mapping it out. So gimme the intel! Don't worry. Big Poppa Karl will be here holding down the fort with Norma Rae. We will send him pics.
ONE LAST THING. I cannot fix income inequality or racism, (although I do my part) but I CAN help feed my hungry fellow citizens. The lines for food banks in this neighborhood are INSANELY LONG. Shamefully long. It is the same in your neighborhood, wherever you live. Please consider donating food to community fridges, or money to local community organizations who are feeding your neighbors. Community fridges are all over this city and you can just walk up and put things inside!
Whatever you do, wherever you do it, whomever you do it with, have a wonderful week.

Hello Hungry Kiddies!
Hellloooooooooo! How are you???
Are you ready for SUMMER? I hope so bc It is COMING. Like, NOW. After spending last weekend huddling with a spaceheater (!!!!!) now I am frantically looking for linen dresses and pants bc it's headed to 90 degrees this weekend. Break out the watermelon and gin and tonics! This menu is definitely geared towards hot weather Lots of room temp dishes, etc, even though I have this perverse love of cooking in a really hot kitchen on a summer day with NO ac and just fans running. I can't explain it. Perhaps it's the growing up in PHX thing? Couple of logistical things: a few of you have started asking "how long will this go on?" And frankly, I have no idea. As most of you know, I invented this in the first weeks of the pandemic just as a survival thing, but it has grown into so much more- something I really enjoy- relationships with all of you, jobs for a few people, etc. I can absolutely say that we will continue on through the summer, and I will be taking my days off to figure out what is next. This delivery service may well go on indefinitely and be a part of the future. I just honestly don't know right now. But I won't just cut it off with no notice, that is for sure. You are a HUGE part of my life! I DO know that if you or anyone else is throwing a summer soiree with friends, etc, please think of me. I am open to catering certain events and would love the recommendations. My staff is all vaccinated and want to work and I would love to be able to give them work. Hello Hungry Kiddies!
I will keep this short. I apologize for this email being late but I was totally hungover yesterday and couldn't muster the strength to write it and/or send it. Some adulting, huh? The good news (I guess?) is that I feel VERY refreshed, so I am chalking it all up to a mental health reset.
The nephew finished his sophomore year on Wednesday. WE ALL MADE IT THROUGH. We could NOT have done it without Gaby, my own personal Mother Theresa without the catholicism. I feel like she singlehandedly turned Caleb's life around and he doesn't even know it yet. Lucky him. Lucky all of us.
For all of you who rented spendy beach houses this weekend, I am sorry and I hope you like Parcheesi. The rain is COMING. Actually this next week will be weirdly chilly so I will put the watermelon gaspacho on the back burner until next week.
Have a great weekend!

Hello Hungry Kiddies!
Good Afternoon!
I AM BACK, BITCHES. Did ya miss me? Hardly any of you texted me. You must have known how busy I was checking off tasks on my mother's list (See above,) and eating Mexican food. WOW. Did I need to leave town and see my family. Here is my brief report on the OUTSIDE WORLD. 1) airports are full and feel totally weird. Many people/no services. Businesses that are open are severely understaffed, making you feel TERRIBLE for the employee. (It's always one lone overburdened employee) 2) planes are FULL, and passengers are acting out. There were 3 mask wearing arguments on my ATL- PHX flight. It was such bullshit. 3) Mask compliance in PHX is about 50%ish, which i guess is ok bc the Gov said no one had to wear them, but the PHX mayor says you do, and businesses say you do. Whole Foods/Greenmarket 100% compliance, luxe apt building where my first air bnb was - 10% compliance. Karl made me promise to NOT yell at unmasked people lest I get shot, so instead i silently seethed and hated them. They could DEFINITELY feel it. I DID yell at people in my San Diego Marriott- (karl didn't say anything about san diego) but mostly they were afraid of me and put their masks on. 4) It sure feels good to be outside, and get a change of scenery, and if you haven't seen your parents in a year I encourage you to check on them. Things...change. 5) I don't believe in Heaven, but if I did, and I got to go, there would be a heated, sparkly swimming pool waiting for me there. It would be a crazy bonus if there could be flowering orange and lemon trees there too. The smell is so intoxicating! 6) I saw a few friends when I was gone and I got a few (fully vaccinated) HUGS and it was GLORIOUS. Truly glorious. And, I am READY to be back! That perhaps is the best part! I missed you and I am ready to be back. I have made no fewer than 5 menus for this week. I CANNOT DECIDE WHAT TO MAKE! Even now I am between a few items. The blooming trees and warmer weather make cooking feel hopeful. More vegetables in the greenmarket don't hurt. Plus, there's inpsiration everywhere, like in my dormant garden, where the sorrel from last year has made an appearance and is ready to be used, and in my parents' blooming citrus trees. Lastly, Ramadan started yesterday! To all who celebrate, Ramadan Mubarak! I will include a Ramadan inspired dish on this menu for the next few weeks, not because I celebrate, but because I LOVE THE FOOD! I am embarassed to say that I didn't know about Ramadan unti I moved to NYC, but I think it's such a beautiful celebration with such inspiring food. I hope you do too. ONE LAST THING. I cannot fix income inequality or racism, (although I do my part) but I CAN help feed my hungry fellow citizens. The lines for food banks in this neighborhood are INSANELY LONG. Shamefully long. I had these at a San Diego restaurant (outside!) called Ironsides. The shrimp were amazing. These will be U15.

Hello Hungry Kiddies!
Good Morning!
I went to MoMA yesterday- my dear friend Katie works there and indulged my whim by walking me in. I haven't seen any art in person in over a year. As much as I was craving being in the presence of beauty, It was a little overwhelming. I didn't stay very long; even at 30% capacity it felt like a lot of people inside. Of course, some galleries were empty and some had 15 people in them- there's no policing that. I told Katie later that it was a real gut punch to feel this extreme- almost ptsd feeling in there. Just being around art WITH PEOPLE was a visceral reminder of all we have lost, and how I personally am changed. I wonder if I will always feel this way? Or if the next time I go I will be able to stay longer? I don't know but I want to find out. The upcoming week is a big one for me. I turn 53. I get my 2nd vaccine on the same day. Everyone asks why I am getting it on my birthday. Well, that's how the scheduling fell and frankly, I cannot imagine a better present. Exactly one year ago on March 12 my whole world closed up, my company tanked, and we were in lockdown. My friends and I were supposed to have dinner at Porsena, one of my favorite places, for my birthday. I got a shag haircut in the afternoon and as the day progressed, it became obvious that maybe we should reconsider dinner? The ladies and I literally cancelled the whole plan 5 minutes before I was leaving the house. We said we could do it when it was safe- in a few weeks. HA. In retrospect, I REALLY wish we had that last dinner at Porsena, which now lives on only in my memories. But when I think about the last year, I think what better way to mark that day than get my 2nd vaccine? It feels like hope incarnate. It feels like planning for the future. It feels like a giant fuck you to Gov Abbott, Gov Reeves, Gov Gianforte and Gov Reynolds. Shame on them. This menu pushes spring a little, because I assume that because I am craving it you are too. I would love a little feedback if you have time, though. Are you going back to restaurants yet? Do you still need me in the same way? Are there things you want that you aren't seeing on my menus? This week will be MONDAY delivery for Manhattan and Brooklyn, Tuesday for Queens. Delivery won't leave LIC until about 3:30 so it will be a little later-4-6:30ish? I hope this works for you. There's a slight chance that we may have to punt some M/B to Tuesday. I have a new coworker so we are just trying to get it all worked out. I will keep you posted. ONE LAST THING. Hello!
**Breaking News!
If you love Preet Bharara like I love Preet Bharara and you want to listen to his *new* podcast, "Doing Justice," maybe read the notes if you're going to listen while you eat your lunch. I am looking at YOU, "Cannibal Cop" Episode. ouch. So how's your week? How's your head? I sort of can't believe that we are under more snow today. I haven't seen my backyard in over 2 weeks! If it weren't for Thin Mints I am not sure I would be able to access my joy. Kidding. Am I? February is always my "I NEEEED some sunlight" month that plays out in depression for unknown reasons, followed by freak out, followed by impulse trip to warm climes for a few days, reset in the sun, and return to NYC as my normal-ish self. I am up to the freak out part, which is probably worse bc I know I cannot proceed to the impulse trip for awhile. I know I am not alone, but LORDIE, I would love to bask in some warm sunshine right now! February is also the month that menu writing gets HARD. How many rutabegas can one woman eat???? Ok, it isn't that bad, but still. I dug deep on this one and made it as fun as I could for you. ONE LAST THING. Hello Hungry Kiddies!
Hello!!
**Breaking News!
Through the miracle of food delivery, as in, I deliver food to you, I got VACCINATED THIS MORNING. I drove deeeep into Queens at 7am to a high school in Elmhurst and got vaccinated. I will never ever forget today- a high school gym with a sea of healthworkers, all working towards ending this terrible virus. Public Health at its best. I was humbled and grateful and deeply moved that I was able to be vaccinated- after so many people have undeservedly lost their lives. I have a lot of feelings that many other people who need it have not been able to get appointments. I know. But I do believe every vaccine is a good vaccine, and each one gets us closer. My second dose is... on my birthday! Ha. You know what? I cannot imagine a better present. The reason you are just getting this now is that 3 hours after the vaccination I started to feel woozy and weird, (which they told me could happen) so i took an all day power nap. Much better now, although my arm hurts. So when you schedule YOUR vaccine, set some time aside, in case you need it. In another year we would be talking about Mardi Gras. Some of us would even go. One year I was down there the week before Fat Tuesday. It was FANTASTIC. The weather was great, there were tons of local parades and barely any tourists there. Music everywhere. Since we cannot enjoy that this year, I thought I would scratch my itch and bring some of it to you, including a nod to the Vietnamese population that has made Louisiana home. There's also some what I think of as "warm blanket" dishes for this bitter cold. Don't look now but there's MORE SNOW ON THE WAY! Thanks for hanging in there with me this week as I left out your salad dressings and puddings. SORRY! I will have a better handle on it this week. There's a reason Anna didn't let me pack the bags!! ORDER EARLY AND ORDER OFTEN! In Love and Garlic- Tamara! PS! A few of you have inquired about my private chef rate . If you have a special dinner/anniversary/birthday meal you would like me to create a menu for, cook, and deliver, let's talk.

Hello Hungry Kiddies!
Good Morning!
**Breaking News! I am in the middle of a crash course in NYC High Schools for Caleb's enrollment next fall. If anyone has any special insight I WANT TO HEAR IT, especially regarding schools that have very strong track teams, and student populations that are diverse both racially and socioeconomically. IT TAKES A VILLAGE and like it or not, I consider you MY village. Good Morning! How ya doing? Did you ever think you would see a day when you were rooting for Liz Cheney? Me Neither! So in my forced week off, in addition to working on the future of how to cook/deliver, etc, I thought I would clean out some closets. A worthy goal to be sure. But NOOOOooooOOOOo
Instead I have spent an inordinate amount of time reading the insanely entertaining posts on the newly famous (to me) wallstreetbets thread on Reddit. Until this moment I have completely avoided Reddit, thinking it was really more for men who live in their mothers' basements than for me, but it turns out I may have been wrong. Don't fret. I am not rushing to buy GME and be the last debutante to the ball, but the commentary is weirdly a breath of fresh air even as it is so crass and insane. I kind of love it, and I have learned so many new terms!! SO. It was clear from the orders that you were really into last week's menu, so I am going to let it stand, with one change to the salad. (Also, the Labeling Department might rebel if I tell him that all of last week's lables must be thrown away, unused.) That said, you need to order again even if your order remains the same bc I have to treat this week as a brand new one. You know, for my sanity!
AND. In the olden days I used to have this epic 2 day celebration of dinner parties in my living room called The Big VD- Lovers and H8TRS, with coordinated menus. Singles, couples, friends attended- some even brought their parents! One year (on a Monday no less!) there were several hookups including a couple who took home a third. It was always an epic set of evenings that started with cake and cava and ended with girl scout cookies and little glasses of digestifs. I am not telling you this to make you cry, (which is what's happening to me right now) but because MANY of you on this list have been to these evenings and I am thinking of you. I tried and tried to figure out how to be able to incorporate some of the Big VD into this week's menu, but... bc it comes so late in the week it doesn't make sense. So know that next year surely we will celebrate and in the meantime, you can read one of my faves from 2019 and relive the glory.
ONE LAST THING. I cannot fix income inequality or racism, (although I do my part) but I CAN help feed my hungry fellow citizens. The lines for food banks in this neighborhood are INSANELY LONG. We went to some old school place where the waitresses were over 60 and wore outfits from the 70's! The ART! I was informed that smiling was for babies and the mentally ill! Hello Hungry Kiddies!
Good Afternoon!
Anna and I just finished a run of food styling for a tv show. We have had some funny/fun/weird/surreal experiences lately doing this kind of work, but today takes the cake.
Today we were in the Intercontinental Hotel in midtown- which you think seems totally normal except... it's abandoned. As in- CLOSED. It hadn't occurred to me that giant luxury hotels would just...close. But there we were, with an entire crew- shooting in this empty, eerie hotel. It felt more like The Shining than any other moment in my life. Even last week when we were in the closed Peninsula Hotel kitchen it wasn't so existentially weird like today was. At one point this afternoon we were walking across this huge lobby with the sunlight streaming onto the tastefully neutral plush furniture and carpeted floors and I belted out a high note just to hear the ring in the space. When was the last time I was ALONE in a hotel lobby? NEVER. Speaking of being alone, I highly recommend spending a moment alone this week reading the text of Amanda Gorman's The Hill We Climb. No, you won't be as great at it as she was, but the words on the page are powerful indeed. And words that bring me hope and humility. Plus, when was the last time you took a moment for poetry? If not now, then when? I hope you enjoyed yesterday as much as we did. We were in an abandoned restaurant, which was also weird, but shortlived. We saw bits and pieces on our phones while we were creating gorgeous platters. We didn't get to watch the inauguration until later in the afternoon but it was just as magical, and when I think about my friends' little daughters only knowing a time when women could be Vice Presidents, it makes me cry. Things I am thinking about for the near future: Valentine's Day Food, Mardi Gras food. You will LOVE my take on Valentine's Day, if you aren't already familiar with it. We are going to try a Pudding of the Week starting this week. I mean, I know you're still on The Whole 30 but that doesn't mean the rest of us are. Some of us are just trying to get our socks on every day. For instance. Last night, thinking I was putting my new concentrated working hands creme on my elbows and heels, I accidently put the new extra strength Chinese Tiger Balm on and then couldn't sleep for HOURS. And... however you spend this week, If you have a moment and the means, consider making a quick trip to your local produce market and buy a few things to stock your community fridge. They have popped up all over the city and are truly filling a need. People leave food if they can, and take it if they need, on their own time. I am working on a new map as my old link disappeared. I will have it in here by next week. Whatever you do, wherever you do it, whomever you do it with, have a wonderful week. ORDER EARLY AND ORDER OFTEN! In Love and Garlic- Tamara! PS! Hello Hungry Kiddies!
Good Morning! We made it to Thursday! Well done!
Happy New Year's Eve. Whatever that means. New Year New You? Same Me.
Dawn Wells died yesterday. I have no idea what she did for the second and third halves of her life, but for the first half she made me INSANELY happy in her role as Mary Ann on Gilligan's Island. I was a complusive reader during my childhood, but my absolute hands down favorite show was Gilligan's Island. I spent hours of after school time watching every episode- all of them more than once. I think the pull was the constant creative and hare brained escape plans, and the collective, "we irritate the fuck out of each other but we are in it together and there's a lotta love here so it works" theme.
One night my dad came home from the restaurant and woke me up to tell me he had saved a life in the dining room. ALAN HALE had been choking and pops gave him the Heimlich Maneuver. THE SKIPPER. It was a highlight.
To clarify- Mary Ann wasn't my idol- she was fine. I wanted to be GINGER. Like, I was dying to be Ginger. Imagine my surprise when I grew up to be Mrs Howell! But still. It felt cruelly ironic that Mary Ann died of Covid the same day my dad tested postive for Covid and my mom started showing symptoms. I think a better writer than I would have a great literary flourish. I am here to tell you that I am heartbroken that this is happening, angry that it is so rampant that he doesn't even know where he could have gotten it- he only goes to the store and he took the car to the mechanic, and afraid for the outcome.
If your parents are still alive, please feel free to use my tale of misery to scare them straight. This shouldn't still be happening to anyone let alone the elderly.
Today feels very wistful and weird. I can't believe 2020 is over. And I want to move ahead. And yet tomorrow feels already like Groundhog Day- the movie. I hope I am wrong.
I had planned on writing this breezy, off the cuff- "i know you are all on juice cleanses so I sort of tried to help you out with that on the menu" email, but... obviously got derailed. Even so. Anna and I call this menu...
CLEANSE WEEK.
You're welcome.
NEW MENU SECTION! This and That appeared last week. Sometimes you need a snack while you're waiting for dinner to reheat. Or lunch. Or Happy Hour. Or 3 am. I don't judge. I created This and That for THAT.
Everyone else has given us all of the hot takes on 2020 so I won't. Frankly, I don't want to look back and ruminate on this one, except to be grateful for what I have, which involves YOU. THANK YOU for reading these missives, and sending me emails, and ordering food from us, and the little gifts and words of encouragement. You have literally helped keep 3 of us afloat in the last 8 months and we are grateful.
Onward and upward to 2021 and all of the normalcy that it might bring. And reunions with our families and friends. We will keep feeding you as long as you want us to, and we thank you for that.

Happy Thursday! We made it! The UWS is emptied out according to Anna, I drove through parts of Queens I had NEVER BEEN TO including a neighborhood where the signs were all in Russian, and the line is 30 deep at my Butcher Big John's. It must be Christmas Eve! Growing up we had few holiday traditions, except Oyster Stew courtesy of my dad for Christmas Eve, (which no one but he and his dad and his grandmother wanted to eat, ) Buckeyes and light dinner at our friend's Carol and David Pharo's home, and when I was old enough to stay up LATE, tamales at midnight across the street at Willie and Emma Tabanico's home. They had a bar (!!!) in their screened in porch, and spent the whole week making tamales and then held a party Christmas Eve that started at 6pm and ended at 6am Christmas morning. Since this city is full of fantastic tamales, I don't feel the need to master them. And I am not so pastry inclined, so I leave the buckeyes to those who are. But I have been thinking a lot about that oyster stew, and my dad making it. It is the inspiratiofor this week's Oyster Pie- which, PS- when I told Anna I wanted to make the look on her face was priceless. And then she found a way that we could execute AND it would travel and reheat.

I hope you're enjoying your snow day. Our tent in the backyard completely collapsed under the weight of the snow. Thanks, 2020!
This is your friendly reminder that you need to eat something next week, and you don't have to celebrate Christmas to eat this menu! We are adding an email list only Korean-ish Stew to the menu as well. Really warming on a cold winter's night.
DEADLINE IS SUNDAY FOR ORDERING THIS WEEK. Don't give us a heart attack by waiting until the last minute!
**AND! If you would like to give a friend a gift certificate towards food in the new year, we can do that! Just let us know.
We look forward to feeding you!

It is THAT TIME- Time to think about What Will You Eat For Christmas When You Are Alone In Your Apartment And Wishing You Could Be With Your Family And Friends!!
Look, I know that was like a slap in the face, but someone had to say it, and that someone is me.
Last year at this time I was catering nonstop holiday parties, which I normally love, but my brother had died in October and I was deep in grief. I can honestly say that being in the middle of someone's Holiday Party when you are treading water is pretty surreal. My staff saved me- covering for me when I had to just walk out and breathe the cold air outside- feel the sting of winter on my face and in my lungs. When I think about that time now, yes, I of course I remember how incredibly difficult it was, but I also remember the JOY (and sometimes awkwardness!!) of holiday parties, and JEEBUS CHRIST do I miss that! Can I get a Hallelujah and an Ugly Sweater please?!?!?
I miss the passed hors d'oeuves and the flutes of sparkling wine and the punch and the cocktails and the amped up servers and the overserved guests and the hosts and hostesses wearing their sexy clothes and slightly nervous energy. I miss the stolen kisses near the bathroom and friends who clearly never get to see each other and the people who hang out on top of us in the kitchen who I have to keep firmly reminding to STOP TOUCHING THE FOOD BEFORE WE PLATE IT.
I promise you, I am READY for Holiday 2021. And no, you still cannot eat the ruffles out of the bag.
It is still hard to accept that I won't have a Porchetta and Standing Rib Roast for 14 this year. And neither will you. But you can still eat well, and watch Bridget Jones or Die Hard or both!
Below is Anna's and my menu with desserts from the one and only Jenny Kellerhals, and our new partner, Tipsy Wine Store in Clinton Hill. has paired 3 wines with our food!
The link to order wine is HERE.
We will offer Delivery on December 23
Pickup on the 24th from both Lockwood Astoria and Tipsy in Brooklyn.
So put on the Christmas Carols and let's get this show on the road!
One last: two holiday shows I will be streaming are very different but both brilliant. Francine Reed will be singing a concert from Phx, AZ on December 21 and
Murray Hill has taped his show in his APARTMENT and it will be streaming here. I will be watching both while we decorate our tree.
And... however you spend this week, If you have a moment and the means, consider making a quick trip to your local produce market and buy a few things to stock your community fridge. They have popped up all over the city and are truly filling a need. People leave food if they can, and take it if they need, on their own time. Here is a map
Whatever you do, wherever you do it, whomever you do it with, have a wonderful week.
ORDER EARLY AND ORDER OFTEN!
In Love and Garlic-
